Natural Allergy Awareness

by Laura Lamun

If you are suffering the sneezy, watery, life-altering effects of the Spring allergy season, you might want to try some of the following suggestions - maybe some of them will give you relief.

1. Lower your consumption of dairy products, pastas, white flours and sugars. These "white foods" as I call them, increase mucous production, which harbors airborne irritants, and will greatly contribute to your snuffly discomfort and severity of symptoms. A short cleansing diet would definitely jumpstart the release of toxins, and rid the body of excess mucous. Add more fresh vegetables, seafood, whole grains, cultured foods, high fiber cereals, brewers or nutritional yeast, berries and citrus fruits.

2. There is a Chinese patent medicine called Bi Yan Pian for sinus-affecting allergies and "nostril diseases" as the old label specified. Available at Healthy Solutions, it is a strong herbal decongestant.

3. Allergies are greatly influenced by the status of the immune system. Any stressors already in place like an animal allergy, low blood sugar due to infrequent eating or hypoglycemia, excess stress, adrenal exhaustion, or low-grade infection, will tire and tax the immune system and make it less responsive to controlling additional allergies. Seek to control these issues and nourish your immune system with extra Echinacea, a steady diet of extra Vitamin C, CoQ10 at 30 mg 3x a day, and the bioflavonoid Quercitin with bromelain.

4. The homeopathic Pollen/Hay fever by BioAllers is very effective due to its complex collection of remedies - it is highly likely the substance you are reacting to will be covered by the formula. I also recommend Pollinosan by Bioforce for the same reason - and they are both fairly tasteless.

5. Freeze-dried Nettles is a single herb remedy that works for a lot of sufferers, especially when it is taken regularly and early in the season. It is safe and effective for children, as well as being a very nourishing plant full of essential minerals, nourishing the kidneys, adrenals, and respiratory system.

6. Avoid smoking and avoid secondary smoke, which magnifies allergic reactions.

7. Eyebright/Bayberry Supreme by Gaia is an herbal extract that acts as an astringent for damp mucous conditions, reduces inflammation & congestion, and also acts as an anti-bacterial if any infection is present.

8. Exercise is important for allergy sufferers- brisk walks, yoga and deep breathing techniques improve healing oxygen uptake & also decrease stress.

9. During an allergy attack, press hard on the tip of your nose, the hollow above the center of your upper lip, and diagonally below nostrils on the outside of the nose, pressing up under the cheekbones.

10. Drink decongestant teas like Breathe Easy by Traditional Medicinals - avoid coffee as it stresses the adrenals and impacts the immune system.

Diet change, and cleansing & nourishing your internal environment are the two most important things you can do to support your body and control allergies.
